Last summer, I spent a week in Barcelona and fell in love with the city. I have put together my top recommendations for places to eat out and visit. I hope you enjoy them!
El Xampanyet
Carrer de Montcada, 22, 08003 Barcelona, Spain
You must go here. We went on a Friday night at around 9:15 and it was rammed! Unfortunately, they don't take bookings, so we waited outside with a few drinks until we got in. It is a really old bar and has run by the same family for generations!
They continuously and generously top you up on the house cava throughout your meal, and apparently the sherry is off the charts. The food is great - Make sure to get the octopus with garlic mash, the omelette with chorizo and the macaroni - they were our favourites.
El Xampanyet is conveniently located next-door to the Picasso Museum (which is worth a visit!). If you do go to the museum take timing into account, as it is quite big (it took us about an hour/hour and a half to walk around it) - it's a great place to go before grabbing a drink/ dinner at Xampanyet.
Bar del Pla
Carrer de Montcada, 2, 08003 Barcelona, Spain
We went to this restaurant without any recommendations, however it was probably our favourite. The food was amazing and the design is really cool. Our favourite dishes were the mushrooms and wasabi dish, tuna tartare (basic but good), beef and the foie gras.
Taverna Can Margarit
Carrer de la Concòrdia, 21, 08004 Barcelona, Spain
Serves very traditional Spanish Catalonian food. We were told to either book or go earlier and book a later table for later, as it gets busy. However, when we went it was quite quiet (think it was because it was early in the week). The food isn't that special but the restaurant itself is really cool. It has huge barrels of red and white wine (not of the best quality) which you order by the jug. We went through 2 litres so there is no wonder as to why we enjoyed the night! It's very grounded and the food isn't posh, but I thought the restaurant itself was just really cool and the staff were great.
El Jardi
Carrer de l'Hospital, 56, 08001 Barcelona, Spain
If you want a cool bar - we went to El Jardi which plays decent music, is set in a beautiful courtyard and has a great bar.
Day trip to Sitges
We took a day trip to Sitges, a coastal town south of Barcelona (a 30-minute train journey costing about 7€). There are loads of beaches to choose from, and way more space compared to 'Barceloneta Beach' (the main one in Barcelona). It is a really nice authentic cobbled street town, with loads of boutique shops, bakeries and restaurants. There's also a cool church overlooking the water which you can explore.
We went to 'Vivero Beach Club' (in Sitges), which is really nice, relaxed and has great food – However you will need to book.
Recommendations we didn't have time to visit: :
- 'La Boqueria' is a food market (located just off ‘Las Ramblas’) which offers a colourful food and drink selection.
- ‘Bunkers del Carmel’ apparently gives you a great 360 view of Barcelona!
- We also wanted to go to the public water fountain show that they put on, but it wasn't open because of coronavirus - if it is open apparently it is a must see!
I hope you enjoy these few favourite recommendations!
